Bombing of San Marino

The bombing was carried out by aircraft from the British Desert Air Force on June 26, 1944, as a result of what Winston Churchill later referred to as an operation conducted based on incorrect information. A total of 263 bombs were dropped mainly on the railway line connecting it to Rimini, resulting in 63 deaths. The reason for this target was the belief that the infrastructure was being used by the Germans for the movement of military personnel and, above all, weapons. In addition to this commonly accepted version, it is suggested that the Allies bombed the territory to kill Field Marshal Albert Kesselring, who was believed to be visiting the Republic at that time. Subsequently, the Allies invaded the territory on September 20, 1944, to pursue the Germans fleeing north, despite the nation being declared neutral.
