La Grand Place de Bruselas es la plaza más decorada de Europa y no es casualidad. El 13, 14 y 15 de agosto de 1695, las tropas francesas al mando de un confidente de Luis XIV, François de Neufville, duque de Villeroy, disparan 4000 bolas de cañón, 5000 bombas y 2000 granadas sobre la ciudad, que inmediatamente se incendia y se quema por completo. Europa está indignada y reacciona con horror ante esta guerra total en la que por primera vez también la población civil no fue perdonada. Tras el desastre, la ciudad resurge de sus cenizas, aunque con nuevas normativas contra incendios, el enderezamiento de las líneas de lote y más atención a la seguridad, la higiene y el flujo. También los Gremios de la Grand Place contribuyen y embellecen sus casas, reconstruidas en piedra natural, con estatuas y mucho pan de oro, y eso es lo que hace que la Grand Place sea tan única hasta el día de hoy.
