La pacífica aldea de artistas de Vlassenbroek se encuentra a lo largo de la meandro del Escalda. La proximidad de la ciudad fortificada de Dendermonde y el implacable Escalda hicieron que la aldea soportara muchas dificultades.
La joya de Vlassenbroek es sin duda la iglesia gótica de cruz dedicada a la santa Gertrudis de Nivelles "Patrona contra la sarna, así como contra el lanzamiento de heno, especialmente en niños pequeños y para la expulsión de ratas y ratones". La iglesia se remonta en su esencia a una capilla del siglo XI-XII de la cual el coro románico en piedra de desecho aún es un remanente. Las naves laterales datan de los siglos XIV-XV. La iglesia fue gravemente dañada durante la Iconoclastia. Las guerras, saqueos e inundaciones hicieron que la iglesia no se restaurara completamente hasta 1640.
