¿Conoces la leyenda de que la negra Virgen de Halle habría recogido balas de cañón con su manto, lo que hizo que sus manos y rostro se oscurecieran por la pólvora? Esa leyenda tiene su origen en un acontecimiento histórico. Bajo Maximiliano de Austria (1482-1493), viudo de María de Borgoña, estallaron varias rebelliones, entre ellas en Gante, donde los habitantes se pusieron bajo el mando de Felipe de Kleef, señor de Wijnendale, Ravestein y Edingen. Cuando Felipe de Kleef quiso conquistar Bruselas, Halle podía esperar un ataque como aliada de Maximiliano. Siguieron tres asedios: septiembre de 1488 (fracaso), mayo de 1489 (también sin éxito) y el ataque del 20 al 24 de junio de 1489. En este último ataque, Halle fue bombardeada con 470 balas de cañón de piedra y/o hierro. Nuevamente, el ataque a Halle fue rechazado tras un intento final de conquistar la ciudad.
