El Dr. Guislain no solo fue un gran médico, sino que también estaba más que familiarizado con el mundo de la arquitectura (de casa). Guislain se encargó personalmente del diseño de una institución psiquiátrica que cumpliera con sus requisitos. En 1824 participó en un concurso convocado por la Société des Beaux Arts de Bruxelles para el diseño de una institución para personas con trastornos mentales. Este diseño quería que el Dr. Guislain se construyera y siguió insistiendo en Gante. Quería que el nuevo centro psiquiátrico estuviera en una zona rural justo fuera de la Puerta de Brujas. Finalmente, después de muchos años, logró lo que deseaba. El arquitecto municipal Adolphe Pauli se encargó de los diseños del Dr. Guislain. En 1857, el instituto abrió sus puertas.
