Gentbruggebrug es una realización de Edmond Block, un curtidor de Ledeberg. Este industrial que se involucró en la política llamó inmediatamente la atención por su dedicación a un puente sobre el Escalda, que conectaría Gentbrugge con los demás municipios periféricos. Sin embargo, los católicos no tomaron en serio esta propuesta y temían que 'Block, con su puente, llevara a la chusma de St-Amandsberg, Oostakker y Destelbergen a Gentbrugge'.
