La mención más antigua de Koersel data de 1166 como Corcela. El nombre podría derivar de la palabra galo-romana: Curticella, una combinación de curtis y cella. Una explicación en latín suena bien, pero una explicación germánica para Koersel es más probable, ya que aquí, antes de los romanos, no había mucho que recolectar en la pobre tierra arenosa... Koersel podría, en caso de un origen germánico del nombre, haber surgido de "Cor - sala", lo que significaría una granja de un noble franco llamado "Cor". Recientemente se ha sugerido otra posible explicación germánica para el origen de Koersel, a saber, un "edificio con torre de vigilancia".
