Opdorp era en la Edad Media una libertad señorial. Esto convertía a Opdorp en una especie de zona de inmunidad. Los señores de Opdorp y su población disfrutaban de una gran autonomía en el ámbito administrativo y judicial. Aparentemente, esto también significaba que Opdorp era un paraíso para contrabandistas y refugiados.
