En Essen crecieron los famosos hermanos Raf y Mich Walschaerts. Nacieron como hijos de un propietario de un club nocturno en Essen. Raf estudió psicología y Mich siguió una formación actoral en Amberes. En 1987, los hermanos de Essen dieron su primera actuación como "Kommil Foo". En 2018, se posicionaron en primer lugar en la lista de los Países Bajos con la emotiva canción "Ruimtevaarder".
