Para la iglesia de O.L.V. de Dendermonde se encuentra la estatua del padre Pieter Jan De Smet o Petrus Joannes De Smet. El padre De Smet primero estudió en los EE. UU. Regresó a Bélgica, pero volvió a Missouri en 1837 y comenzó su trabajo misionero con los indios. Regresaba con regularidad a Europa para recaudar dinero para sus pieles rojas. El gobierno estadounidense reconoció su gran influencia sobre los indios y le encomendó diversas misiones de paz. El padre De Smet falleció en St. Louis en la noche del 22 al 23 de mayo de 1873.
