En 1799, las tropas francesas sacaron todas las obras de arte de la ya desaparecida catedral de San Donato. Una de esas obras fue "Madonna con el canónigo Joris van der Paerle" de Van Eyck de 1436. El 28 de abril de 1799, los revolucionarios franceses vendieron la catedral en público. En los años siguientes, la catedral fue demolida. Con esa demolición también se perdió la tumba de Jan van Eyck.
