Este complejo neogótico se erige sobre un acantilado en la orilla derecha del Lesse. En este punto estratégico, donde alguna vez hubo un vado en el río, se construyó un castillo ya en el siglo XI. Esta fortaleza militar fue destruida hasta en cuatro ocasiones, unas veces por los franceses y otras por los austriacos. De la construcción original, hoy solo queda un donjon y trece metros de muralla, que en algunos lugares supera los tres metros de grosor.
A mediados del siglo diecinueve, lo que se había convertido en una ruina total fue vendido al barón Alfred Brugmann, un banquero. Cuando su hijo Frédéric Brugmann heredó el castillo, lo reformó en 1932 en estilo maaslandés. Así es como se ve hoy en día. No podrás ver el interior de esta propiedad privada, pero puedes pasear –posiblemente con un guía– por los jardines, diseñados por Louis Julien Breydel, el paisajista que también diseñó el Jardín Botánico en Bruselas.
