Ernest y su hermano Alfred desarrollaron un nuevo proceso para la producción industrial de carbonato de sodio. Fundaron la empresa Solvay en 1863, coqueteando con la quiebra mientras perfeccionaban el proceso. De 1870 a 1880, Ernest Solvay supervisó la expansión global de la empresa, estableciendo fábricas en Bélgica, Francia, Reino Unido, Alemania, Rusia y Estados Unidos. Hoy en día, aproximadamente 70 plantas del proceso Solvay todavía están en operación en todo el mundo. Usó su riqueza para fundar varias fundaciones científicas, filantrópicas y de caridad.
