Rillaar también fue llamado "el pueblo de los ciegos". Pero "ciegos" no se refiere a personas con discapacidad visual, sino a las contraventanas de las ventanas (también llamadas ciegos) que se cerraban. Durante la temporada de cosecha, gran parte de la población de Rillaar abandonaba el pueblo, cruzando la frontera lingüística, para cosechar remolachas en la rica Valonia. Y durante ese período, las contraventanas se cerraban. Pascal Verbeken describe de manera notable cómo en la escuela del pueblo, después de la temporada, se permitía que los niños durmieran en clase para recuperarse del duro trabajo.
