El sufijo "Tige" se refiere a Thiois, también conocido como Diets, que hace referencia al hecho de que en ese entonces se hablaba una lengua germánica. Sin embargo, y a diferencia de los pueblos de la vecina Tierra de Aarlen donde el luxemburgués ha sido históricamente la lengua regional, aquí se ha hablado un dialecto romance durante mucho tiempo. La explicación radica en las grandes plagas de peste durante la Edad Media. Estas decimaron a la población original, tras lo cual el pueblo fue repoblado por habitantes de la Gaume de habla romance que han mantenido el nombre del pueblo.
