Massenhoven se mencionó por primera vez en el siglo XII. Hasta 1644, el pueblo fue propiedad del duque de Brabante, en 1644 se otorgó como señorío a Adriaan Brouwers, y posteriormente a las familias de Zinnick, Cannaert y de Saint-Vaast. Alrededor de 1585, Massenhoven fue destruido y en 1702-1703 el pueblo sufrió daños, ya que durante la Guerra de Sucesión Española estaba en la línea del frente contra Francia. También el 12 de mayo de 1940 se produjeron destrucciones.
