Después de la demolición de las fortificaciones de la ciudad, se vendió parte de los terrenos liberados (Eindries) a la prominente familia Liedts. Charles Liedts, un importante jurista y estadista belga, hizo construir una villa alrededor de 1860. Tras exitosas negociaciones diplomáticas con Francia, fue nombrado barón y eligió como divisa "Todo por Deber". Este lema familiar aún se exhibe en los cartuchos del actual castillo. El hijo de Charles, Amedée Liedts, reformó la edificación original e hizo colocar sus iniciales en las ventanas. Amedée, que no tenía hijos, donó el "Castillo Liedts" con la biblioteca, las colecciones de arte y el jardín a la ciudad en 1907 con la condición de que los límites del "Parque Liedts" nunca cambiaran y que también se mantuvieran los huertos comunitarios. Las obras de arte donadas constituyen una parte importante de la Colección Municipal del ayuntamiento.
