En este bosque el nivel del agua subterránea varía mucho; a veces está seco, a veces muy húmedo. El agua de color naranja es agua de brote que sube del suelo. Está enriquecida con hierro que se oxida al contacto con el oxígeno del aire, de ahí ese color. Debido a los minerales típicos en el agua subterránea, durante los períodos húmedos aparecen plantas raras como la lirio de agua. En el bosque antiguo hay mucha madera muerta con una rica vida de insectos. Esto atrae al gran pájaro carpintero moteado. También muchos hongos prefieren la madera muerta.
