Cuando la noche del 19 de agosto de 1914 resonaron disparos de repente en la ciudad, el comandante alemán Stenger fue abatido en el balcón de la casa del alcalde Tielemans. En las horas siguientes, se incendiaron casas y hombres, mujeres y niños fueron llevados a la Gran Plaza. Allí esperaron durante horas, inseguros sobre su destino. En las horas siguientes, se ejecutarían dos grupos de rehenes y los ciudadanos inocentes fueron fusilados.
