Durante siglos, la breza fue el tipo de vegetación más determinante en la región. La breza era pastoreada por ovejas. Aquí vivían los 'heikneuters', a menudo en no más que una cabaña. La pobreza era tan desgarradora que los habitantes recolectaban 'huevos de hormiga' para venderlos en la ciudad a los aficionados que mantenían aves.
