Antes de que fuera posible dar de beber al ganado y los caballos en el establo o en el pasto , el rebaño tenía que ser llevado al abrevadero varias veces al día. Fue un trabajo duro y que consumió mucho tiempo.
En los pueblos demasiado lejos de un río o un estanque, los animales tenían que saciar su sed en los abrevaderos (alimentados de la fuente más cercana).
Hay 2 tipos de comederos rectangulares. Uno tiene un lavabo doble ; el desbordamiento del primer tanque alimenta al segundo. Estos contenedores probablemente también sirvieron como baños. Los otros contenedores más antiguos solo tienen un fregadero.
