Pankow es el tercer distrito administrativo de Berlín , que agrupa tres barrios que hasta 2001 eran distritos administrativos independientes: Pankow, Prenzlauer Berg y Weissensee.
El Barrio de Pankow se creó en el año 1920. La hasta entonces ciudad de Pankow se unió a los municipios de Blankenburg, Blankenfelde, Buch, Bucholz, Heinersdorf, Karow, Niederschönhausen y Rosenthal. Se eligió el nombre de Pankow debido a que ésta era la ciudad más grande. Además, el río Panke discurre a lo largo del barrio.
