El Ernstbach nace a 500 m al noreste de Hof Mappen en el bosque de Hinterland de Rheingau, en el territorio de la ciudad de Eltville am Rhein, cerca del antiguo Gebücks de Rheingau. Pocos metros debajo de la fuente, cruza la línea de Gebück y atraviesa en su camino hacia el oeste el área de Hof Mappen, que ya no pertenece a Rheingau. Luego entra en el bosque de Hinterland, del cual no se separa hasta su desembocadura. Durante este recorrido, describe, desviándose de su dirección general hacia el oeste, un amplio arco hacia el norte alrededor del Ziemerskopf. Después, recibe como su afluente más importante en el puente de Wickersheller el Wickersheller Bach por la izquierda.
