El nombre es una composición del nombre del río Bode y del adjetivo frío, un adjetivo que proviene del alto alemán antiguo o del medio alto alemán y que ha permanecido sin cambios desde entonces. Los nombres de la Bode Fría y la Bode Cálida han surgido por la diferencia de temperatura de aproximadamente 2 °C.
La Bode Fría nace en el Oberharz al pie del Brocken, en la parte sur del llamado Brockenfeld, justo en la frontera estatal con Baja Sajonia, al norte de Braunlage en Bodesprung. Muy cerca se encuentran los orígenes de la Gran Bode, el Ecker y el Oder. Primero, la Bode Fría fluye hacia el este en dirección a Schierke, a lo largo de la ladera norte del Wurmberg. En Schierke, cambia su dirección de flujo hacia el sur.
