En 1871 se comenzó a construir el Niederwalddenkmal siguiendo un diseño de Johannes Schilling y Karl Weisbach. En 1883 se completó el monumento. El monumento alcanza una altura total de 38 metros y en él se erige una estatua de 10,5 metros de altura de la Germania, que simboliza la protección del Rin. Ella recuerda la Reichsgründung, la fundación del Imperio Alemán en 1871 inmediatamente después de la Guerra Franco-Alemana. Desde entonces, el monumento ha sido una atracción turística.
