La Orquesta Sinfónica de la Radio de Baviera de Múnich fue fundada con su nombre actual por Eugen Jochum en 1949, quien fue su director principal hasta 1960. Actualmente la orquesta ha quedado sin director titular tras el fallecimiento de Mariss Jansons, quien había sido contratado para este puesto hasta 2018.[1]
Está considerada como una de las mejores orquestas del mundo y la mejor orquesta de radio en el mundo, la Bayerischer Rundfunk. En 2006 el conjunto recibió el Grammy por Mejor Interpretación Orquestal. La orquesta produce bajo su propia marca discográfica: BR-Klassik.[2]
