Zaratán es un municipio[3] y villa de España situada en la provincia de Valladolid, en la zona central de la comunidad autónoma de Castilla y León. Cuenta con una población de 6.249 habitantes .El topónimo de Zaratán parece proceder de la palabra árabe çaratan, con un significado de «cangrejo fluvial».[4] Otra posibilidad es su procedencia de la palabra sarita, también de origen árabe y que significa cordel; zaratán significaría por tanto taller u obrador donde se hacen cordeles.[5]
