En 1799, el famoso científico y explorador Alexander von Humbolt navegó desde España a América del Sur a través de Tenerife. Sin embargo, cuando llegó aquí a Tenerife, no vio nada más que una espesa niebla. Cuando la niebla desapareció, vio el volcán Teide brillando al sol. Y esta sería la primera montaña que Alexander von Humboldt escaló fuera de Europa.
