Ayora es un municipio[3] y una localidad de España situada al suroeste de la provincia de Valencia, en el centro de la Comunidad Valenciana. Se encuentra en la comarca del Valle de Ayora y forma parte, asimismo, del partido judicial de Requena.[4]
Hay varias opiniones sobre el origen del topónimo. Según Joan Corominas derivaría del árabe uyura, con un significado de onagro, asno salvaje. Para Álvaro Galmés de Fuentes, sin embargo, provendría de la raíz prerromana abia, río, más el sufijo diminutivo latino ola. Esto daría como resultado Abiola; la sílaba /-bi-/ palatalizaría en /y/ y la sílaba /o/ no diptongaría por influencia mozárabe.[5]
