Gex es una comuna francesa situada en el departamento de Ain, del cual es una subprefectura, de la región de Auvernia-Ródano-Alpes. Es la cabecera del distrito y el bureau centralisateur del cantón homónimo.Es la capital regional del Pays de Gex. La ciudad, cercana a Suiza, forma parte del área urbana de Ginebra. Gex está al pie del macizo del Jura, unida al departamento del Jura por el paso de la Faucille. Se encuentra junto al río Journans. Tiene 3 200 hectáreas y su altitud media es de 617 m.
