El Cotentin[1] es una región natural normanda del macizo armoricano francés, llamada antiguamente Pagus Constantiensis , situada entre el estuario del río Vire y la bahía del Monte Saint-Michel y que coincide sustancialmente con la península del mismo nombre.Antiguamente, la parte norte del Cotentin era casi una isla, separada del continente por los Marais de la Douve . Solo una delgada franja de tierra en los páramos de Lessay la conectaba con tierra firme.[2] Hoy, gracias a las compuertas ubicadas en la costa oeste, pero principalmente en la costa este, en la bahía de Veys, ahora es una península.
