Este antiguo bosque ocupa un macizo de 300 hectáreas que domina la meseta de Lorena. El sensible espacio natural del bosque de Ranzey y sus viejos árboles son un terreno de juego favorable para determinadas poblaciones de aves, como el papamoscas de collar, así como para una docena de variedades de murciélagos, es decir, la mitad de las especies conocidas en Lorena.
