Los arzobispos de Bourges utilizan, en competencia con los asientos de Auch y de Burdeos, el título de primado o de patriarca de Aquitania o de los Aquitaines desde el siglo VII. Desde el siglo XIX, el título utilizado es el de primado de los Aquitaines.[1]
Durante la Revolución francesa, en 1790, el departamento de Indre fue separado para formar la diócesis de Indre cuya sede estaba en Châteauroux. Esta diócesis fue suprimida en el Concordato de 1801 y el departamento de Indre se integró en la arquidiócesis de Bourges.
