En el siglo XII, un puente cruzaba el Vienne a unos 100 metros aguas arriba del puente actual. Mientras defendía este puente contra las tropas francesas, el 31 de diciembre de 1369, Jehan Chandos, jefe de los ejércitos ingleses que administraban la ciudad de Poitiers tras la derrota de Juan el Bueno, fue herido de muerte por Jacques de Saint-Martin, un escudero francés. Fue llevado al castillo de Morthemer y murió allí al día siguiente, el 1 de enero de 1370.
Clasificado como Monumento Histórico en 1909.
