En el siglo XVI, Montpellier se convirtió en "capital de la botánica", disciplina que se enseña en la Facultad de Medicina. El Jardín Royal de Montpellier, es el más antiguo de Francia, creado en 1593 por Pierre Richer de Belleval, un joven médico. Tras ser destrozado en 1622 durante el asedio de Montpellier por el ejército de Luis XIII, fue restaurado en 1629. Los mejores botánicos se suceden en su dirección. En el siglo XVIII, fue reorganizado por F. Boissier de Sauvages. Desde finales del siglo está abierto a los ciudadanos de Montpellier. A lo largo de los siglos XIX y XX ha experimentado un período de renacimiento y diseño. Es propiedad del Estado pero lo gestiona la Universidad de Montpellier I.
