Lydd dio su nombre al explosivo Lyddite o ácido picrínico. Tenía un sabor amargo. Eso es lo que significa el nombre ácido picrínico (en griego). En 1888 se probó aquí por primera vez en el Reino Unido. Lyddite era la misma sustancia que fue patentada en 1884 por el francés Eugène Turpin, conocido allí como melinita.
