Gagra es una ciudad de la región de Abjasia, en la costa nordeste del mar Negro, al pie de los montes del Cáucaso, capital del Distrito de Gagra. Su clima subtropical hizo de Gagra un popular refugio saludable en tiempos de la Unión Soviética.
Desde la guerra de Abjasia en los años 1990, la población ha disminuido considerablemente. Tenía una población de 26 636 habitantes en 1989, pero se ha reducido debido a la expulsión masiva de la etnia georgiana de Abjasia. El pueblo es todavía frecuentado por turistas rusos, que van desde el complejo turístico de Sochi, situado a solo 22 km al norte.
