Mantinea fue una de las antiguas y poderosas ciudades griegas de Arcadia, en la frontera con la Argólida, al sur de Orcómeno y al norte de Tegea. Su territorio se llamaba Mantinice . Su fundación mítica se debe a Mantineo, hijo de Licaón, o a Antínoe, hija de Cefeo.[1] Es mencionada por Homero en el Catálogo de las naves de la Ilíada.[2]
