El Museo Nacional Húngaro es el museo que alberga la primera y más grande colección pública de Hungría. Se encuentra en uno de los edificios más hermosos de la Gran Avenida. Su estilo es clasicista. Fue inaugurado en 1846.
Se dice que fue fundado en 1802, cuando el conde Ferenc Széchényi creó la Biblioteca Nacional Széchényi. Fue seguida, un año después, por la donación de una colección de minerales por la viuda de Széchényi. Esto llevó a la creación de un Museo Nacional Húngaro como museo de historia natural, y no sólo una biblioteca. En 1807 el parlamento Nacional Húngaro legisló la nueva institución y pidió a la nación que ayudaran mediante donaciones al museo.
