El nombre de Bivongi tiene muchas hipótesis etimológicas. Tiene una origen de las diferientes variedades de idioma calabrés: Bivungi, Buvungi y Bugungi, y como dice en el Diccionario toponomástico y onomástico de Calabria de Gerhard Rohlfs deriva del latín Bubungium , En XVI siglo se llama Bofongi.[3]
El nombre griego es Boβὸγγεζ como está escrito en el Brebion, documiento griego del 1050, escubierto da Guillou en la biblioteca privada de los contes Capialbi de Vibo Valentia.[4]
