Esta iglesia probablemente data del siglo XII y, con su envidiable posición panorámica frente al Monte Cofano, es un elemento icónico del paisaje monumental de Erice. Fue restaurado en el siglo XV y reconstruido por segunda vez entre 1631 y 1672, época en la que se construyó la cúpula y que lleva una inscripción grabada con esa fecha. La construcción del campanario, iniciada en 1691, quedó inconclusa. En 1798 se completó con estuco.
La Hermandad de San Giovanni Battista fue una de las tres principales cofradías de Erice .
La iglesia alberga obras maestras de la escultura renacentista siciliana, como el Grupo de Visitación de Gabriele di Battista, obra de 1497. En la capilla de San Giovanni Evangelista sobre la mesa del altar hay una estatua de mármol de San Juan Evangelista , obra de Antonello Gagini en 1531
