El Beguinaje en Ámsterdam es el único beguinaje fundado en la Ámsterdam medieval, situado dentro del Singel. La estatua del Sagrado Corazón en el beguinaje data de 1920, creada por Johannes Petrus Maas. Los beguinajes son raros en los Países Bajos; además de Ámsterdam, hay también un gran beguinaje en Breda. El beguinaje en Ámsterdam se encuentra casi un metro más bajo que el resto del centro de la ciudad, en el nivel de calle medieval. No está claro cuándo se fundó el Beguinaje. Las beguinas aún vivían en una sola casa en 1346. No se menciona un beguinaje hasta 1389. Originalmente, el Beguinaje estaba totalmente rodeado de agua, con una única entrada a través de una puerta en la Begijnensteeg. Las fachadas traseras estaban, por lo tanto, en el agua. La entrada en el Spui existe solo desde el siglo XIX.
