El puente conecta Noordereiland con el antiguo puerto. El puente lleva el nombre del rey Willem III y fue diseñado por C. Veerling. Se creó en 1981. En 1983 recibió el Premio Nacional de Acero (Nationale Staalprijs).
El predecesor de este puente desempeñó un papel importante durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial. El ejército holandés defendió este puente tras la invasión de los alemanes el 10 de mayo de 1940. Pudieron detener la invasión alemana en este punto y los alemanes decidieron bombardear el centro de Róterdam el 14 de mayo de 1940.
