Hasta la renovación, que comenzó el 1 de noviembre de 2009, el Museo Municipal de Roermond estaba completamente ubicado en la casa que el arquitecto P.J.H. Cuypers construyó en 1853 para sí mismo y su socio Stoltzenberg. Detrás de la casa se encontraban los talleres de arte religioso del Atelier Cuypers y Stoltzenberg.
La base para el Museo Municipal se estableció en 1930, cuando el pintor roermondense Henry Luyten donó una parte de su obra a la ciudad de Roermond. El hijo de Cuypers, Jos, puso el edificio a disposición como alojamiento para esta colección. Jos Cuypers también diseñó las salas Luyten donde se expusieron las pinturas. Otro componente fijo de la colección era la obra del artista del vidrio Joep Nicolas.
