Según la leyenda de Nieuwkoop, el lugar se originó cuando un grupo de gitanos pasó por allí en el siglo XII y se rompió una rueda de carro, tras lo cual decidieron establecerse permanentemente. Esta rueda de carro fue posteriormente incorporada en el Escudo de Nieuwkoop. Sin embargo, los primeros habitantes de Nieuwkoop no eran gitanos, sino personas que se asentaron allí para la explotación de turba. De esta explotación de turba surgió una masa de agua a ambos lados de la dike, una de las cuales fue desecada, y la otra se transformó en un área natural que hoy en día es conocida como las Nieuwkoopse Plassen.
