El pueblo está situado al sur de las localidades de Heerenveen y Oranjewoud, y justo al este de Nieuweschoot. La aldea adyacente de Anneburen forma parte formalmente del pueblo. Al este se encuentra el área de Het Oranjewoud. El antiguo nombre del lugar es Scoete o Scote. Desde 1408 se habla de Old Schooten, que más tarde se convirtió en Oudeschoot. El nombre se refiere a 'schoot', es decir, una porción de tierra que sobresale. Desde la Edad Media, el pueblo fue el centro de Schoterland, aunque la casa de la municipalidad de Schoterland se encontraba hasta la disolución de ese municipio en Oenemastate. Hasta aproximadamente 1750 también se administraba justicia en el pueblo y allí se reunía el consejo de distrito.
