Antes de 1998, también fue la sede del municipio que lleva el mismo nombre. Desde 1998, Sleen forma parte del municipio de Coevorden.
Sleen se encuentra en dos senderos de larga distancia: el Pieterpad y el Drenthepad, y limita con el área natural de Sleenerzand, que tiene 1,600 hectáreas de tamaño.
