Jelsum se encuentra al sur de Cornjum y al norte de la ciudad de Leeuwarden. El núcleo del pueblo está situado en el lado este de la N357. En el lado oeste hay algunas empresas. Esta parte se llama Nieuwland, o Nijlân en frisón. En el pasado, esta parte era el Middelzee y la N357 era la duna que debía contener el agua.
