Está situado un poco al oeste de Drachten y al norte de Boornbergum. El pueblo se encuentra en el lado oeste de la Drait. En 2021 tenía 670 habitantes. Junto con Smalle Ee y Buitenstverlaat, ha tenido una asociación de intereses de la aldea desde 1945. El pueblo fue durante mucho tiempo una aldea de granjas dispersas. Más tarde, se desarrolló un pequeño núcleo. En 1580, el lugar ya se mencionaba como De Wilgen. El nombre del lugar podría referirse al hecho de que había muchos sauces. El lugar no ha tenido iglesia. Hasta 1955, también fue formalmente una aldea de Boornbergum, después de lo cual obtuvo el estatus de pueblo.
