Elst es la aldea más grande del municipio de Gelderland, Overbetuwe, entre las ciudades de Arnhem y Nijmegen. Elst tenía 22.620 habitantes el 1 de enero de 2021. Desde 1812 hasta 2001, Elst fue un municipio independiente; en ese último año se fusionó con Valburg y Heteren para formar el municipio de Overbetuwe. El documento más antiguo en el que se menciona el nombre de Elst data de 726. En él se menciona el lugar Heliste. Se supone generalmente que este nombre proviene del germánico *alhistja, que significaba "santuario pagano", o es una derivación de *alha, que puede describirse como "lugar de residencia". El nombre Heliste se transformó en, entre otros, Elistha y finalmente Elst.
